Human handoff, or human-in-the-loop (HITL), is what lets a Voiceflow WhatsApp agent hand a conversation over to a real person mid-chat - without the customer needing to repeat anything or move to a new channel. The customer keeps chatting in the same WhatsApp thread; only who's replying on the other end changes.

Voiceflow agents are strong at structured conversation design - guiding users through flows, qualifying leads, and answering common questions. But like any chatbot, a Voiceflow agent will eventually hit a question it can't resolve, or a customer who simply wants to speak to a person. Without a human handoff solution, that's usually where the conversation stalls or the customer gives up.

hitlchat connects directly to your Voiceflow project using your Voiceflow API key. Once connected, it monitors WhatsApp conversations for handoff triggers - HITL keywords typed by the customer, or an agent manually taking over - and when one fires, the bot pauses on that conversation and it's routed into a shared team inbox. Your agent replies from there, with the full bot conversation visible, and can hand control back to the Voiceflow agent once the conversation is resolved.

Just as with Botpress, hitlchat supports two ways to connect a Voiceflow agent to WhatsApp. The right choice depends on your message volume and how quickly you need to launch.
Our general recommendation: Many agencies building Voiceflow assistants for clients start every new client on the QR code connection during the pilot phase, then migrate to the WhatsApp Business API once the client is ready to scale messaging volume or run broadcast campaigns.
